Season Two is the second season of The Glee Project. It aired in the summer of 2012, from June 5 until August 14. The competition was won by Blake Jenner beating Ali Stroker and Aylin Bayramoglu in the finale.
Season two of The Glee Project will return with Ryan Murphy and Dante Di Loreto continuing as executive producers, along with series executive producers Michael Davies and Shauna Minoprio of Embassy Row. During the eleven week run of the series, The Glee Project contenders will be narrowed down through intensive rounds of homework assignments, singing, dancing and acting-based assignments as the creative forces of Glee carefully assess who has what it takes to be one of the next new faces of the award-winning show. Murphy will once again join casting director Robert Ulrich and choreographer and Glee co-producer Zach Woodlee in the final deliberations of each installment of the series. Vocal coach Nikki Anders, who mentored the contenders on-air in season one, joins the judging panel in season two each week as a permanent member. Additionally, continuing with the format of season one, Glee series regulars will appear on The Glee Project as guest mentors, including Lea Michele (Rachel Berry on Glee) in the show's premiere episode.
Open casting calls for season two took place in Chicago, Nashville and New York, in addition to a competitive online search.
The possible audition songs were:
- The Edge of Glory by Lady Gaga
- You and I by Lady Gaga
- I'm Yours by Jason Mraz
- Drops of Jupiter by Train
- Unchained Melody by Righteous Brothers
- Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood
- Ordinary People by John Legend
- This Kiss by Faith Hill
- Out Here on My Own from the musical Fame
Each episode of The Glee Project is given an overall theme and covers events that have taken place in about the time span of a week.
- Contenders are given a "homework assignment" that entails learning and practicing segments of a chosen song. At the beginning of each episode, contenders perform their respective parts of the song in front of a mystery guest judge from the Glee cast. The contenders that completes the homework best is given a one-on-one session with the guest star and a principal part in the music video.
Music video (group performance)
- Contenders then create a music video "inspired by the performances on Glee." In preparation for the music video, contenders record parts of a song in a professional studio with vocal producer Nikki (née Hassman) Anders. They also learn choreography from Zach Woodlee and/or Brooke Lipton, his assistant. The music video is shot by video producer Erik White and the entire process is overseen by Glee's casting director Robert Ulrich.
- During callbacks, the bottom three are revealed. They are critiqued by Robert Ulrich, Zach Woodlee, and Nikki Anders about their performances. They are then assigned a song that they will perform in hopes of being "saved."
Last chance recital
- The bottom three of the week perform their assigned songs in front of Ryan Murphy himself. With input from Woodlee, Ulrich, and Anders, a decision is made and one of the bottom three is eliminated.
- Unlike most reality competition shows, contenders are not directly informed of their elimination. Rather, the bottom three are notified when "the list is up" and discover their fate as they find their name on the list. Following the final callbacks, the eliminated contenders sings lead on a segment of "Keep Holding On" by Avril Lavigne with the rest of the contenders as backup.
