Pairability is the fifth episode in season one of The Glee Project, a spin-off of Glee, in which young hopefuls compete for a seven episode guest starring role on the show.

Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) is back; the contenders struggle singing duets, and one contender must confront a deep personal boundary.

Guest Mentor: Darren Criss
Homework Assignment Winner: Marissa
Eliminated: Matheus

Summary[]

The contenders are paired off and sing Need You Now by Lady Antebellum as their homework assignment. Marissa performs with Cameron, Samuel performs with Lindsay, Hannah performs with Damian, and Alex performs with Matheus. Darren says the top two were Samuel and Marissa and he chooses Marissa as the winner. For her prize, she will have a one-on-one mentoring session with him and get to choose her partner for the music video. Marissa chooses Samuel, which hurts Cameron's feelings.

The pairs for the music videos are: Alex and Hannah sing Nowadays from the musical Chicago dressed in 1920s costumes, Damian and Matheus sing The Lady is a Tramp from the musical Babes in Arms in an autumn park setting, Marissa and Samuel sing Don't You Want Me by The Human League where their concept is that they are 1980s pop stars, and Lindsay and Cameron sing Baby It's Cold Outside by Neptune's Daughter filmed in black and white in a snowy evening setting.

Hannah is initially nervous to sing with Alex because he is a strong performer but the mentors compliment both of them. The mentors note that Damian is in his element for the song choice while Matheus is not. Erik directs Marissa to surprise Samuel with a kiss during filming, which impresses the contestants who are watching backstage. Lindsay kisses Cameron during their video, which makes him uncomfortable. He calls his mother afterwards and tells her that he felt like he cheated on his girlfriend. Backstage, Matheus and Alex show off their vocal high notes and Matheus mentions that Ryan told him to be more confident. Marissa clarifies that confidence is not cockiness, which Alex agrees with. Mateus appears downtrodden by Alex's comments and Damian tries to encourage him.

Unlike previous Last Chance Performances, only the winning pair of the week is safe and the other three pairs must perform duets for the judges. Marissa and Samuel are safe while the others prepare for their performances. The pairs are the same as the music videos. Hannah and Alex sing Valerie by the Zutons, Damian and Matheus sing These Boots Are Made For Walkin', and Lindsay and Cameron have to sing River Deep - Mountain High by Ike and Tina Turner. Ryan tells Hannah and Alex that their energy was infectious and Ryan jokes that he's surprised that Alex didn't dress up as Amy Winehouse. Ryan praises Damian and Matheus for wearing rain boots for their performance but notes Matheus didn't seem to apply Ryan's note about being more confident. Damian explains that Matheus was trying to act more confident but Alex regularly cuts him down. Ryan compliments Lindsay's voice and likes that Cameron shared that his religious and moral beliefs. He says that he'd like to write a Christian character for Glee.

When the contestants are called back, Ryan proclaims that Lindsay, Hannah, and Damian are safe so the Bottom Three are Alex, Damian, and Matheus. Ryan asks Alex and Matheus to make amends with each other. Alex apologizes to Matheus, which he accepts. But backstage, Alex and Matheus get into another argument where Matheus accuses Alex of trying to guilt him for talking bout their fight to Ryan if Alex gets eliminated. In the end. Matheus is eliminated; he sings Keep Holding On.
