Individuality is the pilot episode for season one of The Glee Project, a spin-off of Glee, in which young hopefuls compete for a seven episode guest starring role on the show.

Guest Mentor: Darren Criss
Homework Assignment Winner: Matheus
Eliminated: Bryce

Summary[]

The twelve contestants are greeted by guest judge Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) before their first homework assignment that requires them to sing a couple lines each of Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) by Stevie Wonder. Matheus wins the homework assignment, earning him the starring role in the group's music video of Firework by Katy Perry and the opportunity to work one-on-one with Darren Criss.

The group records the vocals and films the music video for their rendition of Firework by Katy Perry. The music video is set at a high school yearbook photoshoot and the contestants select their own "Most Likely To" class superlatives to portray. They are judged on their vocals and their individuality that they can bring a character to Glee. During rehearsals, Bryce struggles to keep up with the choreography and appears to irritate choreographer Zach Woodlee when he makes suggestions to his character's scene in the music video. Meanwhile, Ellis is ill and struggles with her vocals. Hannah also struggles in the recording booth and asks director Erik White for advice on how to stand out on camera. During filming, Zach and casting director Robert J. Ulrich privately discuss that Ellis' character seems too babyish and Zach advises Ellis to tone down her expressions.

After reviewing the music video, Robert announces that Damian, Bryce, and Ellis are in the bottom three for the week. They will have the opportunity to save themselves from elimination in a "last chance" performance in front of Glee creator Ryan Murphy, Robert, and Zach. The contestants are then assigned a song by Robert to prepare for the judges.

Damian sings Rick Springfield's Jessie's Girl and due to his unfamiliarity with the lyrics, he accidentally sings "I wish I was Jessie's girl," instead of "I wish I had Jessie's girl." During critiques, Ryan tells Damian that he needs to overcome his nerves and compliments his charm. Bryce sings Bruno Mars's Just the Way You Are, and is very nervous because he feels the song is too high for him. Ryan notes Bryce's difficulties in hitting the notes and asks Bryce what he possesses that the other two contestants don't. Bryce responds that he's never heard anyone sing like him or look like him, and Ryan likes his response. Ellis sings Big Spender from Sweet Charity. Ryan compliments her vocals but notes she seemed like she was trying to portray who the judges wanted to see instead of her authentic self. In the end, Bryce is the first contestant of the competition to be eliminated. He sings Keep Holding On with the other contestants backing him up.
