Theatricality is the second episode in season one of The Glee Project, a spin-off of Glee, in which young hopefuls compete for a seven episode guest starring role on the show.

Guest Mentor: Idina Menzel
Homework Assignment Winner: Alex
Eliminated: Ellis

Summary[]

For their homework assignment, the contestants perform Bad Romance by Lady Gaga in front of guest mentor Idina Menzel (Shelby Corcoran) to show off their theatricality. Idina declares Alex the winner and he receives a one-on-one mentoring session with Idina and the lead role in the week's music video, We're Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister. The music video is about a student (Alex) who is being harassed in school, and then he drifts off into a fantasy sequence in which he and his friends are rock stars who proclaim that they won't be bullied any longer.

During filming, assistant choreographer Brooke Lipton notes that several contestants are struggling to step outside of their comfort zone to portray the rock star characters. Matheus voices his worries about looking stupid and Ellis complains to Brooke that she doesn't want to look like a "dumbass." Also during filming, Erik tells Ellis to kiss an extra as part of a scene, which is her first kiss. Lindsay asks if Ellis was a good first kiss, which embarrasses Ellis and she becomes annoyed with Lindsay.

After the shoot, Emily warns Ellis that her comments about the choreography were inappropriate. When Ellis expresses confusion, Lindsay explains that Brooke appeared to be offended by Ellis' "dumbass" comment. Ellis and Lindsay get into an argument, in which Ellis accuses Lindsay of attacking her when she is down.

Robert announces the contestants that are in the bottom three are Mckynleigh, Ellis, and Matheus. Then they are each assigned a song to sing for Ryan Murphy. Matheus sings Gives You Hell by The All American Rejects. The judges like his energy, but Ryan Murphy questions him about his self-confidence. Ellis sings Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin but the judges are concerned with her constant negative attitude and are skeptical of her promises to be more positive. McKynleigh sings Piece of My Heart by Janice Joplin and while Ryan Murphy loves her voice, he tells her that he doesn't know how to write a part for her in the show because she doesn't show off a personality. In the end, it is Ellis that is eliminated. She sings Keep Holding On.
